Ocean and Bay Beaches
Wellfleet offers a variety of ocean, bay and freshwater pond beaches. On the ocean side are Newcomb Hollow, Cahoon Hollow, White Crest Beach, and Maguires Landing. The cool surf and long stretches of smooth sand make them the favorites for body surfing, sunbathing and picnicking. Surfboards and hang gliders are restricted to White Crest Beach, and hang gliders are allowed only before 9 AM and after 5 PM. Parking along Ocean View Drive is prohibited and subject to fine and towing, even with a beach parking permit.

The warmer and calmer salt water of the bay invites swimmers and shell collectors. The Town maintains parking areas at Indian Neck, Mayo Beach, Powers Landing and Duck Harbor. Windsurfing is only allowed at Burton Baker Beach, at Indian Neck, and only during certain hours of each tide, so windsurfers should obtain a copy of the regulations at the Beach Sticker Booth on the Town Pier.

Beach parking permits are required at most Wellfleet beaches from the Saturday prior to July 1st, till Labor Day. Non-resident beach parking permit fees are:

  • 1 -week: $50
  • 2-week: $95
  • Season: $200

They are available at the Beach Sticker Booth on the Town Pier, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM daily; 'til 8:00 PM Friday and Saturday. They may also be available at your motel, cottage colony or real estate agency. Your car registration, and a beach parking permit form, or a lease, signed by your landlord, are required as proof of renting in Wellfleet. Personal checks are not accepted at the Beach Sticker Booth. A $15 daily fee is charged for parking at White Crest and Cahoon Hollow beaches. Parking is free at Mayo Beach and on the Town Pier.

Ponds
There are parking areas, where beach parking permits are required, at the three major fresh water ponds: Gull, Great and Long Ponds. Please help us keep them clear and clean by picking up litter, washing off salt water, and using a bathroom before swimming in the ponds. Use stairs and trails to prevent erosion. Pond animals should not be bothered or taken from the pond; frogs cannot live long in a bucket, and turtle populations can be altered adversely for years by removing turtles from their home. Internal combustion engines are prohibited from all ponds, as are soap, detergents, shampoos and the rinsing of diapers. No animals are allowed at the ponds.
